Toto e Cleopatra
Italy, 1963

Antonio de Curtis (Toto)
Directed by Fernando Cerchio

Marc Anthony, called back to Rome from Alexandria (where he fell in love with Cleopatra) by Ottavio who wants him to marry his sister Ottavia, is seized by his legitimate wife Fulvia. She substitutes him for his stepbrother, Totonno, who is his double. Totonno then goes to Egypt but ill-treats Cleopatra so badly that he is condemned to death. On Marc Anthony's return however, he is reprieved. Next Ottavio declares war upon Egypt, Marc Anthony dies and Totonno takes his place. Finally Totonno returns to Rome with Ottavia at his side and served by Cleopatra, who he has made his slave.

English title: "Totò and Cleopatra". Toto is played by Neapolitan actor, writer, and songwriter Antonio de Curtis, whose stage name was actually 'Totò'. He was so popular that his movie vehicles often incorporated his name in the titles. Some of these, notably "Totò e Cleopatra", "Toto d'Arabia" and "Toto Sexy", were parodies of established 'serious' film genres.
