La Sposa del Nilo
Italy, 1911

Fernanda Negri Pouget, Orlando Ricci, Gastone Monaldi
Directed by Enrico Guazzoni

Ranses, a young Egyptian, tells his betrothed Amebi that the streets of Thebes are crowded with people waiting for the Nile to flood the country and give fertility to the soil. Prayers are offered up and offerings made at the Temple, including two doves presented by the young lovers. Isis responds that a young virgin should be consecrated to her in the Nile. Amerbi joins the throng of virgins circling the image of the goddess and to her lover’s dismay, it is she who is chosen to be sacrificed. She is borne away into an inner sanctum. Stricken with anguish, Ranses seeks his friends who advise him to remove her by force. The attempt is made, but in vain; the lovers are arrested. Amebi is carried back into the temple and Ranses is ejected with a curse. Later Amebi is arrayed as a bride and led forth to her doom. At the bank of the Nile she faints on the ground. The High Priest lifts her and the cruel decree of Isis is fulfilled as she is flung into the water. (source: BFI)
